How I Prepare for Triple Coupons

How do I get ready for a special event such as Triple Coupons Week? I'll show you below!

I first go to Southern Savers and check out their lists of many of the deals that are to be had this week. Jenny, the lady who runs the site, posts many of the free and cheap deals of the week, along with coupon matchups. This list is invaluable, as it saves me so much time. I simply click the boxes of any items that I would like to have and if I have that same coupon I know that I'm going to get a good deal. She also tells you if there is an available printable coupon. I can print the coupon right there from the site, and then print out her shopping list to take with me to the store. Yes, I do go through each list. It is slightly time consuming, but since I don't normally do this much work, I'm willing to do it during triples week. I figure the great deals and stockpile that I will accomplish this week is worth it! This should cut down on my shopping in future weeks.

Next, I go through all of my coupons in my binder and pull any that will triple ($.99 or less), particularly if it's a coupon that I think Jenny mentioned or if it's an item that I think will be a good deal after tripling. Remember, it's all guess-work until you see the official ad come out on Wednesday morning, so just go ahead and pull any that are of interest to you and hope the item will also be on sale next week.

Next, I take my Southern Savers list and paper clip all coupons to the grocery list that I made. If I have time, I organize the coupons by aisle in the store, in order to save myself time. I have found that if the coupons are all set and ready to go, I save time by going in order from aisle to aisle, rather than walking back and forth across the store. I usually start at the produce section and work my way around the store from there.
My list of deals printed from Southern Savers, along with matching coupons paper clipped.
These are my free deals, the ones I will try to get first!

All remaining coupons (and believe me, there are a lot of them- over 100 for me), go into my envelope labeled, "Triple Coupon Deals" and I will pull them out before my next grocery trip and decide which to use. Remember, you can only double or triple 20 coupons per day, so if you have more than 20, you will need to go back another day.

All of my triple-potential, pulled coupons,
paper-clipped together by aisle, ready to go for price checking.

If I really want to get a certain deal, I get up early on Wednesday morning (6:00 a.m.) and get there early, shop, then be in line to pay at 7:00 a.m. Coupons won't triple until 7:00 a.m. It pays to be there early because often the items that will be free or really great deals will sell out. 7:00 a.m. is probably overdoing it, but I have to shop before my husband goes to work. One of my rules is that the kids don't go with me shopping! So, if I don't go early, I have to wait until my husband gets home in the evening, and some things would likely be gone by then. Also, I don't like to make multiple trips looking for items, so things that I really want, I try to go ahead and get early on the first day.

I hope this post has been helpful to you in showing how I get ready for triple coupon week. It's going to be a busy week, that's for sure! Feel free to share with me how you organize yourself for this special week!

Rising Peanut Butter Prices- Good Reason to STOCK UP!

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post, "Free Peanut Butter for All" in which I shared my great deal on peanut butter. I got 11 jars of Skippy for free, only paying a penny tax on each jar. It was on sale at Harris Teeter and after my coupon doubled, it ended up being free.

Last week I stocked up on Planters brand peanut butter, getting it free at Lowes Foods after my coupon doubled. All in all, I have about 16 jars of peanut butter now. It's a good thing, too, because they don't expire for over a year and now, it's expected that peanut butter prices will rise dramatically in the coming months.

In the article from three days ago, Peanut Prices Rising to New Heights, from Cleveland news, hot and dry weather has devastated this year's peanut crop. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that this year's crop will be 13 percent smaller than last year's. The result is that consumers will see higher prices on peanuts and peanut butter, at least through winter.

Vincent Byrd, president and CEO of the J.M Smucker Company, makers of the number one selling brand of peanut butter, JIF, says that he expects prices to rise by 30% by November.

Hopes are that next year's crop will be better and hopefully, alleviate the rise in prices.

Sometimes stockpiling can get a bad rap, but this is just another example of why it's so important to stock up when the price is low. Especially considering all the volatility in the economy right now, it certainly pays to take a good deal when you can get it, because the deal may not be available later!

As an F.Y.I., Planters is still on sale for $1.50 at Lowes Foods through Tuesday night, so if you have the $.75 off coupon, it will be free. Get it now while the price is still good!

Total Value of Raleigh paper coupons: 154.63

Dollar for dollar, the Raleigh paper had more coupons, but the variety and different coupons in the local Wilmington paper was nice. If you get the Wilmington paper, you will get all those nice General Mills coupons (although many of those General Mills coupons are also available for free to print online from my website). All in all, I'd say if you can get your hands on them, get both!

Harris Teeter Triple Coupon Deals

Harris Teeter will start triple coupon week on Wednesday, September 14th! That means that any coupon with a face value of $.99 or less will triple. To be clear, 25 cent coupons will triple to 75 cents off, 50 cents off will triple to $1.50 off and 75 cents will triple to $2.25 off! You can triple up to 20 per day (that's the limit- don't try to cheat because the computer will remember your VIC card and any over 20 will not triple)!

Jenny, from Southern Savers, one of my favorite coupon match-up sites, has posted the first list of triple coupon deals. She usually posts three lists of deals before the week is over.

Attached is her first list of deals for triple coupon week. I noticed lots of free item opportunities, and many have printable coupons that you can print from your computer to use. Others you will need to look in your binder or coupon folders and pull the coupons needed. Either way, you should have plenty of chances to get some great deals!
A few notes about triple coupon week- sometimes items will sell out, so be patient and understand that these special weeks attract more customers, all trying to get a good deal. The earlier you can go, the better (some people show up 7 a.m. on Wednesday mornning). The grocery store will, however, restock throughout the week, so if you can go back a second time, you might be able to find some items that were out. If they are out again and the item was on special, you could also get a raincheck, but keep in mind that the coupon won't triple until the next triple coupon week!

One final note- sometimes on these special weeks, I notice that there are less sales. Be sure that you're still getting a good deal even with the coupon tripling. It's fun to watch the coupon triple, but don't buy items just because you have a coupon unless it really is a great deal.

Click here for a list of some of the great deals! Remember, Jenny doesn't list EVERY deal, since deals sometimes vary by region, so be sure to pull any coupons that you want to check to see if it might be a good deal after it triples.

Great Staples Deals Through Wednesday!

Can we say 1 cent Printer Paper!!!!

I happened to be in Staples today making copies and noticed some excellent deals. The once cent sales last through Wednesday- all other prices in the ad last through Sunday. A couple of the one-cent deals are easy rebates. I know that the word "rebate" immediately turns some people off (including me, usually).

But since I have done Staples easy rebates before, I know that they REALLY are super easy. You can complete them online in a matter of seconds with the receipts they give you when you check out. As with most rebates, I suggest you complete them sooner rather than later, because you always run the risk of losing the rebate receipt or missing the deadline.

Another thing I love about Staples is their rewards system. I make lots of copies there and I also usually buy my printer ink there when it's on special. If you sign up for a Staples rewards card (free and easy), every quarter you get back a percentage of the purchases that you made there, including printer copies. They send the reward to your e-mail in the form of a rewards certificate that you redeem in the store. Last month my certificate was for $10, which I immediately put towards buying printer ink! I have been making lots of copies so I assume my next rebate check will be even bigger.

Here are the deals that I saw at Staples this week. Hurry because the once cent deals end on Wednesday night!

1 cent Hammermill Copy Plus Paper 500 sheets (limit 2 and must do easy rebate)

1 cent HP 4x6 photo paper (limit 2 and must do easy rebate)

1 cent Staples erasers 12 pack (limit 2 and no easy rebate required)

1 cent Staples brand glue (limit 2)

1 cent Pentel Pens 4-pack (limit one and must do easy rebate)

$1 for Staples White mailing envelopes (25 pack- no easy rebate required)

$1 for BIC mechanical pencils 5 pack (no easy rebate required)

$1 for Zebra Sarasa retractable gel pens 5 pack (no easy rebate required)

50% off all backpacks

****There are so many other deals there- I named the best ones that I saw but check out the store flyer here or drop in for more!****

Competition is a Good Thing!

Whole Foods Store in Silicon Valley, CA

In the Wilmington area, we are so lucky to have several grocery stores to choose from when doing our shopping. Most people can easily access Food Lion, Lowes Foods, and Harris Teeter. There is also Piggly Wiggly, which I have heard has great prices on meat.

In addition, there are a variety of drug stores to choose from, including Rite Aid, CVS, and Walgreens. There is also the regional chain, Kerr Drugs, in the area.

The reason I mention this is because each of those stores run sales ads, trying to compete for our business, hoping to out-do one another on the low prices. We even benefit from the fact that stores like Bi-Lo and Kroger are in other parts of the state such as Raleigh. Although they are not here, the grocery ads tend to be the same across the state. So Harris Teeter, for example, might try to run great specials to compete against all the other grocery stores in the state, including ones that we don't have here locally in Wilmington. The consumer always benefits from competing chains!

Fresh Market Store in St. Petersburg, Florida

One recent example that I have seen of competitive pricing is in the specialty store category. Many of you are familiar with the Fresh Market fresh foods grocery store near Mayfaire. I always considered that store to be upscale and expensive. They offer amazingly fresh produce and meats, along with many other prepacked foods and gourmet cooking items. I compare it to Whole Foods grocery store, which specializes in high quality and organic foods. (Some people jokingly refer to Whole Foods as "Whole Paycheck.") They are not exactly the same, but I do think they attract a similar kind of customer.

Recently I learned that Wilmington, NC will be getting a Whole Foods grocery store next year. It will be located near Independence Mall on Oleander where a Lowes Foods store formerly was. I personally am not into organic foods but I know that many people are, so this will open up a whole new ballgame when it comes to competing in those customers. In fact, just recently the Fresh Market has started doing $2.99 Tuesday sales, offering great prices on certain items Tuesdays only. Is this in response to the new Whole Foods that we are getting? I can't say, but I do expect there to be some great pricing on organic items from local grocers such as Tidal Creek and Loveys, as well as better pricing from some of the big chains here, all in response to the Whole Foods that is coming.

Whole Foods store in Silver Springs, Maryland

The Whole Foods grocery store is set to open spring of 2012. For now, check out the $2.99 Tuesdays at the Fresh Market. Highlights include $2.99 ground chuck, $2.99 fresh chicken breast, and $2.99 for a whole pineapple. Great prices!

Labor Day Deals and Steals!

This week marks the last opportunity to save big on summertime holiday cookout items. Many sales are seasonal, so since this is the Labor Day weekend coming up there are many sales with matching coupons on cookout type items.
